In addition to patching, some
patients may require glasses to correct refractive errors
and improve the response to patching. Patients with strabismus
need to have their amblyopia corrected before proceeding
with surgical correction.
Treatment
Options - Amblyopia
Amblyopia treatment is age-dependent:
the younger the patient at start of treatment, the better
the improvement in visual acuity.
The
mainstay of amblyopia treatment is patching . The "good"
eye is patched to allow the "lazy eye" to send more
messages to the brain. This in turn improves the vision
of the lazy eye.
The amount of patching needed is
determined by the patient's age, the degree of disparity
in vision between the two eyes, and other factors such
as concomitant neurological or other diseases. Patching
is generally continued until vision is equal or no further
improvement is seen after a certain period of time--usually
two to three months.
Patching can be fun for kids. Click the link below to learn how and about the Patch Club.
